Butter chicken has become a staple all around the world. Now a days you see butter chicken flavors being used for
pizza, chips, burgers, sandwiches, and even shawarma’s.

Easy Butter Chicken Recipe

There are a variety of ways to cook butter chicken as well as several butter chicken recipes online. Whether you like the curry dish with a bit of sweetness, thick, or lightened, mild or spicy; the flavors are endless!

Known as one of the most popular dishes in the world, this curry staple is known as a simple and easy to create dish that can be changed to anything a chef wishes it to be a dish with tender and juicy chicken thanks to a deliciously spiced yogurt marinade and spices. The Indian themed curry sauce is incredible as well depending on how its flavored!

The ingredients list is the best part about making Butter Chicken at home. Every ingredient is readily available at any grocery store or supermarket.

Can’t go wrong with a good butter chicken. Make it the way you want add more spice or make it more sweet!


There are several ways to cook butter chicken I will be going through 2 of my methods for my butter chicken recipe I use to make the dish.

Butter Chicken Curry Dish

1. Standard Recipe Benefits:

  • Authentic Taste to the original
  • Shorter time then air frying chicken
  • Juicier taste compared to air fryer

2. Air Fryer Butter Chicken Benefits:

  • Healthier to make as less oil is required
  • A crispy like texture on chicken pieces
  • Less monitoring required as the chicken in air fryers can be set to a preset timer or set the timer to 10-15mins depending on your air fryer

Butter Chicken Recipe: Special ingredients / Substitutes


Chicken Breast Substitutes:

Chicken breasts can be substituted in a variety of ways compared to the original dish.

  • For those who are looking for a vegan option, paneer or soya chunks are one good alternative. If using paneer or soya marinate both for 15-30mins then fry in sauce pan before pouring in the curry sauce.
  • Chicken thighs are also one other great alternative for this indian themed dish. They can be cut into small pieces or left as is with marinade
  • Chicken legs I recommend cutting them into legs and thighs so that all the flavors can blend into the pieces better. If you plan to keep the skin for chicken legs I recommend marinating for 30mins then frying in oil to give the legs a crispy taste. Then mix with curry

Sweet or Savory:

People like their curry in a specific way whether more sweet or a bit of tang below is some alternatives that can be added to butter chicken.

  • Instead of sugar honey can be added as a replacement if you are looking to cut back on sugar or want less of a sweet taste
  • Yogurt can be added to the sauce along with heavy cream to give it a more tangy/savory taste
  • Try a variety of veggies to increase your curry quantity. Some veggies such as mushrooms, green peppers, and red peppers are some ways to change up your butter chicken dish
  • Yes I know it sounds crazy but if your looking to add a bit of a kick add more chili powder to your dish or some sriracha

Simple & Easy Butter Chicken Recipe

Equipment

  • Measuring cups

  • Wooden spoons

  • Saucepan / Pot / Fry pan / Air Fryer

  • Blender / Mixer

Ingredients

  • For Marinade:

  • 750g (3 1/2 cups) of boneless chicken breasts or alternatives (adjust as necessary)

  • 1 cup natural plain yogurt (3% recommended)

  • 1 teaspoon of salt or 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon turmeric

  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder

  • 1 1/2 tablespoon minced ginger

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons minced garlic

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons of garam masala

  • For the curry sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons of ghee or butter

  • 1 tablespoons of minced garlic

  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander

  • 1 large onion finely chopped or sliced

  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin

  • 2 teaspoons garam masala

  • 1 1/2 cups of crushed tomatoes (400 grams)

  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder (add more or less depending on how spicy)

  • 1 teaspoon of salt (add more or less depending on flavor)

  • 1 1/2 cup of heavy cream

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of curry powder or 1 teaspoon kasoori methi

Instructions

Marinade Chicken

Combine Chicken with all of the ingredients mentioned above for the marinade and let it sit for 30mins to 1hour covered

Fry the chicken

Heat oil or ghee in a large skillet over medium high heat. Fry the chicken until breasts are browned and set aside in a plate or bowl. Air Fryer Instructions: Air fry the chicken for 15-20mins until fully cooked and set aside in a plate or bowl

Making The Sauce

Using the same pan toss in butter or ghee until melted then toss in onions. Fry onions until brown. Add in garlic and ginger for 1 minute until mixed well with onions

Making The Sauce

Toss in ground coriander, cumin, garam masala, chili powder and let it cook for 15 seconds

Making The Sauce

Add crushed tomatoes and salt and let all the ingredients simmer for around 15 minutes make sure to sir occasionally until the sauce thickens and mixes with all of the ingredients

Blend/Mix The Sauce

Grab your sauce mixture and toss it into a blender and blend until your mixture is smooth. If your sauce mixture is to thick add some water to it to help lighten the sauce.

Pour the sauce back into pan

Now that your sauce mixture is blended well pour it all back into your sauce pan and pour in your heavy cream, sugar, and curry powder (or kasoori methi). Cook for 1min

Toss in the chicken

Toss in the chicken and cook for an additional 5-10minutes until sauce has thickened

Serve

After cooking garnish with some cilantro if you wish to do so and serve with rice or naan bread

Notes

Chicken can be alternated with paneer, soya, boneless chicken thighs, and chicken legs. Experiment with your sugar and chili powders to alternate your butter chicken dish
